I prefer to capture an essence rather than an exact likeness.  My choice of medium, whether it be oil, watercolor, gouache or pastel, is dependent upon what the image conveys to me.  Sometimes when I'm very lucky a painting almost paints itself, as if the subject has taken over and I am merely an observer.  One of my current series, "Creatures" is inspired by quiet walks along the beach.
